WHAT: The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life is a unique celebration of life in honor and in memory of those whose lives have been touched by cancer. It has been described as a "huge compassionate support group"- a place where friends, family, and loved ones join to celebrate survivorship and to honor those who have lost the battle. Relay For Life involves teams of 8-15 people who take turns walking around the UNI Dome all night long. A party-like atmosphere prevails as team members camp out for the duration of the event to enjoy music, food, fun, entertainment, and activities while building camaraderie with fellow teammates and participants. Money is raised through team donations secured from family, friends, companies, and corporations.

WHEN: April 13th and 14th from 6 P.M. to 6 A.M.

WHERE: University of Northern Iowa, inside the McLeod Center next to the dome. Need Directions to the Mcleod Center? CLICK HERE!

WHO: Everyone who wants to have fun and do their part in the fight against cancer.

HOW: Form a team of 8-15 people. Assign a team captain. Click here to form a team or to find more information. You can also make a secure online donation supporting our event by clicking here.

WHY: It will be a night of fun celebrating “HOPE” with an estimated 2,000 fellow participants. Also, the money we raise helps support programs of the American Cancer Society such as research, education, advocacy, and service-locally, statewide, and nationally.

BENEFITS: It will be a night you and friends will cherish for a lifetime. Our goal is to raise $100,000 for the American Cancer Society, so we need your participation and support.

HIGHLIGHTS

SURVIVORS LAP: Cancer survivors from around the community and state are invited to take a victory lap and be honored by fellow participants. Participants are strongly encouraged to invite all friends and family who have overcome or are currently fighting cancer. It will take place at approximately 6:30 P.M. Friday. Survivorship is our reason to Relay, and this highlight of the UNI Relay will be inspiring to all in attendance.

LUMINARIA: An inspiring and emotional luminaria ceremony that pays tribute to those who have been affected by cancer. The ceremony will take place between 7:30 and 8 P.M. Friday. Luminarias are purchased (suggested $10 donation) in honor of those who have survived their battle with cancer, for those still fighting, and in memory of those who have courageously lost the battled to the disease. The luminarias are kept burning through the night to represent the healing power of the community and the importance of finding a cure. Everyone’s encouraged to decorate your own luminaria (materials available at event) for that special someone. Pictures can also be attached to the luminarias.

FIGHT BACK CEREMONY:  We Relay because we have been touched by cancer and desperately want to put an end to the disease. This ceremony gives participants the tools they need to continue in the fight against cancer ALL YEAR LONG.

LOGISTICS: Please feel free to bring your own food or refreshments to the event. Coolers are welcome. No alcohol or tobacco products allowed. You may bring a tent, boom box, blankets, cards, or games etc. There will be entertainment, such as live bands and karaoke, and contests throughout the event. Participants should bring money for contest entries, food, and Relay merchandise.
